Get on a Plane to Edinburgh Airport. Once there, leave by any route, and either a) approach a taxi and say "64 Marchmont Crescent, Please Mate," whilst offering money, b) get on the bus (which leaves every half hour), get off at Waverly Bridge (the last stop) and follow the directions below for By Train, or c) Call (0131) 667 9735, tell us your in Edinburgh, and we might come and give you a lift, if we're not busy.

By Bus

If you decide to take the easy way out, there are taxi stands at the Bus Station. Smile sweetly at the driver, tell them you wish to go to Marchmont Crescent, and should they ask, you want to go to the top end. (It will cost about £5 at maximum)

But, should you decide to be fit, or are skint, here are the directions on foot:

From St Andrew's Bus Station.

Once you arrive at the National Section you want to turn off to your right (Away from St. James's Centre). Once you come out the bus depot you will be standing on St. Andrew's Square (see Map). You want to turn to your left and walk down South St. Andrew's Street. There are a few banks on the left hand side. When you come to the bottom of this street you will see Waverley Shopping Centre ahead of you and Top Shop/Top Man will be on your right hand Side. Cross over at the bottom of this street and go off to your right. You must go down the street on your left which is Waverley Bridge (see Map) and follow the directions below as per By Train.

By Car

Ideally you will not be coming up to Edinburgh via the A1. It's a horrible route with hardly any passing places and there is a 60 mph speed restriction, not to mention that it is very heavily policed. Not forgetting the speed cameras make you feel like you are in Hollywood. Well they did flash a lot when we went down to Balsa's Party!

Approaching from the South East:

I would recommend coming via the A68. Not only is there nice scenery but there are a few good straight bits which allow you to pass by farm machinery and other such slow vehicles you may encounter on your route. It is quite twisty and there are a lot of hills, so possibly not for those of you with a delicate stomach!

You follow the sign posts for Edinburgh. Passing through Northumberland National Park, and quaint places such as: Rochester, Jedburgh (do stop to admire the castle on the way... if you have time), Earlston, Lauder and Dalkeith. It's quite simple really.

After you hit the sign post for Midlothian you will be in Dalkeith. You now have to follow the A7.

This will take you to the City Bypass and a roundabout. You want to go straight over the roundabout (well round it rather than through the middle!) following signs for Danderhall.

You will pass Lowe's Fruit Farm on the right hand side and a Shell Petrol Station further along. Keep on this road, don't take any turn offs. Further down this road you will see a group of four high rise flats on your left hand side and an Esso Petrol Station on the right. (see Map)

You are on Old Dalkeith Road. Keep going straight down this road. Once you get to the bottom of here you will see a Mazda Car Dealer's on the right hand side and Cameron Toll Shopping Centre on your left.(see Map)

There is a strange roundabout set up here. You want to go straight over and continue down Dalkeith Road. There is a graveyard (Newington Cemetary)and Stonemasons on your left. Keep going down this road until you see the Royal Commonwealth Swimming Pool on your right. (On the Opposite corner, diagonally from where you are, is Scottish Widows HQ). You want to take the next opening on your left (East Preston Street) after the swimming pool. There is a primary school on the opposite corner of this opening.

At the bottom of East Preston Street (see Map) you will come to a crossroads and again you want to carry on straight over. There is a pub called the Wine Glass on your left hand side.

Continue over this junction (now in Preston Street). When you come to the bottom of this street you want to turn right (at Droothy Neebors Pub) then a sharp left (you should see a small chip shop on the right hand side). You are now on Sciennes.

A little along this road you will see a small traffic island. Turn to the right along here and you will pass a primary school and the Sick Kids Hospital on your right hand side just a little along.

Further along this road you will see the Argyle Bar on your right and the road veers off to the left, with the Earl of Marchmont Pub on your left. You have now entered Marchmont Crescent. (see Map)

We are about three quarters of the way up on the left hand side. No. 64. Wilson, McDonald and Farquhar are on the buzzer, third from the top. Someone should let you in. (If they don't, they will be tortured!)

The finale of your gruelling task is to get to the top floor. Don't worry! An array of beverages (and possibly nibbles) will be available to refresh you from your long journey.

Approaching from the South West:

Assuming you are coming from the M6 and through Carlisle. (or that general vacinity) You want to get to Edinburgh via the A7 if you want the scenic route.

Ok the A7. Come off the M6 at Junction 44. Go through Longtown, Langholm (nice picnic spot along here should you need to stop), Hawick (home of sweaters), Ashkirk, Selkirk then on to Galashiels. Once you pass "Gala" you then go on through Stow (cart horse town) and keep going to Midlothian. Keep following all the signs for Edinburgh and the A7. You should arrive at the roundabout at the City Bypass and just follow the directions as above from the City Bypass.

You could also come up from the A74 then the A702 for a slightly faster route.

If you want directions for this then please contact us. It's all a bit too much to include in this page.

By Train

How to get to the flat from Waverley Train Station. (on foot)

(There is a taxi stand here should you wish to come via cab and it will cost around £3-4 Tell the driver it's at the top end of Marchmont Crescent, should they ask).

Ok once you leave the Train Station (see Map) you will be standing on Waverley Bridge. You wanna turn left and walk past the Tattoo Office (Edinburgh Military tattoo that is... not some froovie body art shop!) and you will see a mini roundabout straight ahead. Go straight over and up a winding street (Cockburn Street). This is actually quite a steep street (for those who aren't all that fit) but it has a load of kewl shops like: Pie in the sky, Ground Control, Eden, Whiplash Trash etc (and you will also pass a pub called the Malt Shovel) on the left hand side, thus you can do some window shopping on your way up the street to lessen the aerobic intensity :o)

Once you reach the top of Cockburn Street you are at the Tron. You should see an old Church just over to your left on the other side of the street. A pub called EH1 (wow they named a pub after a postcode.. how original) is on your right hand side. You wanna turn right at this point. You should also see a shop called White Dove (next to the Games Workshop) opposite. Walk past this and up towards St Giles Cathedral. This is the Royal Mile (see Map), which leads to the Castle funnily enough. If you get lost at this point, we will be quite disappointed. But there are phoneboxes here should you be stuck.

Passing St. Giles Cathedral, you will come to a crossroads. Deacon Brodie's Pub will be diagonally right and the Edinburgh City Council's Chambers is the building on the left of where you are standing. Turn left and walk straight up this road... this is George IV Bridge.. As you walk up this road you will see Bauermeister's Bookshop and the Elephant House (cafe should you need some refreshment) on your right hand side. You can also stop and admire the statue of Greyfriar's Bobby further up. You will notice you come to a fork in the road. You want to go off to the right of the Bedlam Theatre (another old church which stands in the middle of the road, you should also see this landmark on your way up George IV Bridge). This takes you onto Forest Road (see Map).

You walk up here til you come to a set of pedestrian crossings at the top. On your left hand side is a pub called Doctors. You want to cross over onto Middle Meadow Walk (see Map). This leads you across the Meadows (you can recognise it by the amount of trees and greenery ahead). On your right is Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (should you have any accidents on the way up). Keep walking straight on down and through the Meadows. Once you come to the end of the Meadows, cross over at the Pedestrian Crossing and carry on straight up the street ahead of you. This is Argyle Place (see Map).

Once you get to the top of here there is a pub on the right hand corner called... you guessed it, The Argyle Bar. Turn right here. This is Warrender Park Road. You will notice the road curves round to the left and there is a Scotmid Wine Shop on the right hand corner and the Earl of Marchmont Pub on the left. You want to follow this road round to the left and you are now on MARCHMONT CRESCENT. Well done! You wanna walk about half way up and start looking for No. 64. It's on your left hand side. Once you get to it you wanna chose the second button from the top: the one with Wilson, McDonald and Farquhar on it. Someone will let you in. Now here's the hard part. We are on the top floor. But do not fear. A stiff drink and oxygen mask will be provided once you arrive into the flat.
