geek info ahoy...

for your amusement, here is some information about the things on my network. the naming convention is the usual blend of nonsense. originally, all the machines were named after ships from elite. not snakes, really. networks being the evolving things they are, this isn't true anymore. the two servers are now named after the main characters from the wonderful megatokyo, and most of the hosts are individually named. in fact, at the time of writing there's only one elitey machine on. awww.

connection
we have a sweet 2Mbps connection via blueyonder. if you live in an area they serve and you ain't with them, you want to be. decent pricing and technical competence? unheard of!

the gateway, mail relay et al. as usual, the linux boxen are the actual workers on the network.

the domain controller and exchange server. you can actually run that stuff on a machine of this spec with resources to spare. freaky, huh?

my new baby. it's very pretty and quiet, and doesn't run quite as hot as deuterium plasma. nearly, though.

mamba - dead

os: cisco ios 12

a nice wee router that is very sad at the moment. it's out of commission because its power supply died spectacularly one sunny tuesday afternoon.

cobra - decommissioning

cpu: intel pentium iii 550
memory: 256mb
graphics: nvidia geforce2 gts
storage: 15gb scsi, 35gb scsi, scsi dds4 tape

this long-serving... uh... server is being put out to pasture. this is partly because its once-capacious disks are starting to be too small to be useful, but mostly because it sounds like a jet engine and has a huge case that eats loads of space

viper - recommissioning

os: microsoft windows xp professional & debian gnu/linux 3.0

my ex-desktop. at the moment it's sitting under a desk waiting to have the rest of its innards cannibalised.

this laptop currently lives with kate and the kids. i'm told it's very happy there.
